Wire A Skype Competitor Launched By Its Co Founder

Since its launch more than 10 years ago, Skype has become the primary tool for making VoIP calls and instant messages.

Microsoft scooped up Skype from eBay back in 2011 for a meaty $8.5 billion, and now Skypes co-founder Janus Friis has revealed a new tool that will compete directly with Skype. Called Wire, the service is now available for iOS 8 and above, OS X 10.9 and above, and Android 4.2 and above.

"Skype was launched more than a decade ago. A lot has changed since then -- we are all used to free calls and texting, and we have taken to carrying our computers in our pockets," said Friis. "It is time to create the best possible communication tools, as beautiful as they are useful. Wire is just that."

According to the company, Wire users will be able to share images, YouTube video and SoundCloud music, and theyll be able to do VoIP calling and individual and group instant messaging.

To start a call, users simply click on the name of the person displayed in the friends list, and then click on the phone icon. To end the call, users must click on the X in the upper left corner. To transfer the call to another device, users must click on the "Transfer Call Here" button found on a banner flashing on the other device. Free calls require that both parties use Wire.

Check-Out The New "Wire"

Prior to that report, Microsoft revealed in October that as part of the WebRTC standard, the company is now supporting the new Object Real-Time Communications (ORTC) API. This will allow Skype users to chat and make calls directly from Internet Explorer without the need for a browser plug-in.

Asus tests its first Android TV set top box dubbed Nexus Player

Android TV is coming this fall and manufacturers are preparing their upcoming products to conquer people’s living rooms. Asus is one of them, and leaked benchmarks of its Nexus Player show the company is testing its first Android TV set-top box.
The unannounced set-top box runs Android L and packs a quad-core 1.83GHz Intel x86 CPU and a PowerVR Rogue G6430 GPU complete with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The system has undergone tests on 23.7″ and 31.9″ displays, both of 1080p resolution.

While seeing an Intel CPU inside an Android TV set-top box is a bit unexpected, it’s certainly cool to see Intel stepping up its game in the Android world. Google says Qualcomm, Nvidia, MediaTek and Marvell chips will also get their primetime in Android TV products.
Judging by its name, the Asus Nexus Player will likely find its shelf place at the Google Play Store when the time comes. In addition to Asus, Razer is also preparing a streaming Android TV box, while Sony, Philips and TP Vision are preparing their future TVs to come with Android TV out of the box.

Its Thursday Weekly App Selection 02 by PhonAsia

Every Thursday, we are going to publish an app selection with a brief review.

First things first, lets begin with some games.

Game Selection

Rymdkapsel (3.59 €)

The developers present the game as minimalist as it get but dont get misguided. It is a strategic kinda, sorta tower defense. You build a ship, you can assign jobs then you can expand your ship by recruiting more workers in order to defend yourself against waves of enemies that become stronger with time. On top of pushing back enemies from your beloved space ship, you have to manage several resources as well.
The game can get frustrating during the first runs since you need to learn a few things that are not well explained but you get quality time and it is worth your money.

Beach Buggy Blitz (Free)

It is a Mario Kart like game. Racing with karts and multiple bonuses to win as unfairly as possible. There is also a multiplayer mode and it is free, you have no excuse to, at least, not try the game.

News

News Republic (Free)

There are lot apps that can do what News Republic (NR) does but not nearly as pleasant as NR especially on Tablets. Basically, it is a RSS hub and you choose the themes on which you want to informations (sports, politics, high tech, etc...). It is so smooth, so beautiful on tablets, you just cannot miss this app.

Utilities
I find often that people underestimate how important are utilities especially during the holidays season. You might be cut off (or partially) of the world or your habits and you need to perform some tasks. Well, here are your utilities apps !

Evernote (Free)

If you do not have this app, download it now. This is the most powerful notes app. It allows syncing between almost every OS (Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android and Windows Phone), so you can check your notes from anywhere while you might have originally taken them on your computer.

Helium (Free)

This is a must have in case you are changing phone or upgrading one through a custom rom or an official one. You can make back ups of your apps and data of your apps as well without root (but easier with root). Titanium Backup can already do that but it is much much more user friendly.
Helium can also save your back up in the cloud (Google Drive or Dropbox) and use them on an another device (new or different like a Tablet) but this feature requires a in-app payment.
The video is the official tutorial made by the dev team.
