‘BioShock’ for iOS game review

BioShock needs very little introduction. If you have been playing video games for the past decade or so, you would have heard about it far too many times by now and most probably played it back when it released on the PC and consoles in 2007.
The full game has now been ported over to iOS and is available on both, the iPhone and the iPad. There has been a reasonable amount of hype surrounding the iOS version, considering how popular the PC and console versions were, so let’s see how good the port is.

Gameplay

For those who don’t know, BioShock is a first person shooter that takes place in the underworld dystopian (formerly a utopia) city of Rapture. Due to events that take place before the game begins, the city is now in ruins and overrun by genetically altered humans known as Splicers, which will be your primary enemy. There are also other, bigger enemies you will occasionally face called Big Daddies, who follow around and protect little girls named Little Sisters. Calling them enemies may not be entirely correct, as whether or not they attack you depends totally upon whether you go after them first. You are responsible for your actions in the game, and depending upon how you choose to play, you could get either of the two endings.
The combat system is far more advanced than your run of the mill shooter, which may not seem like much now but was a big deal back in 2007. You have two weapon types in this game, one of which is called plasmids. Plasmids give you special abilities, such as releasing electricity or fire through your hand. The secondary weapon can be a gun or a wrench. The game encourages using both as a combo, for example, stunning enemies with electricity or fire before bludgeoning or shooting them. You can use just one of them to finish off the enemy but it’s faster if you use them together and you end up using less of each attack type.
The plasmids use up your mana called Eve, which can be recharged by collecting Eve syringes. As you play, you collect additional types of plasmids and more guns. You can have all of them with you but only one can be assigned to the shortcut buttons that lets you quickly toggle between them. Other than the Eve, you also collect different kinds of tonics, that enhance your abilities, such as making you stronger and more resistant to attacks. You can have any one tonic enabled at a time.
You can refill your health by picking up the health kits. There are also consumables scattered around the world, such as chocolate bars, chips, liquor, and cigarettes. Chocolates, chips, etc. will give you some health when you eat them. Liquor will give you some health but will reduce your Eve a bit. If you drink too much you can even get dizzy for a while. Smoking reduces your health, but gives you some Eve.
Other than finding stuff lying around, you can also raid corpses to gain some Eve, ammo, food, or money from their pockets. The game has plenty of spaces to explore to find additional loot if you are not in a hurry to finish it.
You can also hack into the defense drones in the game. The hacking is done as a mini-game, where you rearrange pieces of a pipe to get the liquid to flow from one end to the other, and if you fail you lose health due to the electric shock and it could also trigger an alarm to alert enemies. If you succeed you can use the drones to aid you in hunting down enemies.
The combination of the weapons, story, and characters meant that BioShock was very unique when it came out all those years ago and still manages to be interesting. The gameplay has a bit more depth than your usual run and gun shooters. The dual weapon style means you can mix and match different plasmids and guns but there isn’t a whole lot of ammo or Eve lying around so you have to be careful and not go guns blazing. Lastly, some actions have consequences, so you need to decide how you are going to go about playing the game. These are moral decisions, and if you don’t care about that kinda stuff, you’d know what to do.
Although not a horror game as such, BioShock is definitely creepy as hell, and most of the time you are playing with trepidation. The eerie sounds from the Splicers and the Big Daddies don’t help either. Nor do the jump scares.
The controls in the iOS version are respectable. They could have been screwed royally, considering the multiple weapons at disposal, but the developers have managed to keep things fairly easy and accessible. Also, BioShock doesn’t really require precise shooting so the fact that you’re playing on a touchscreen is less of an issue here.

Graphics and Sound

The original BioShock still looks good on PC, which is a testament to how good the game was back when it released. Considering it’s a fairly old game, one would have expected the iOS version to be decent as well. Unfortunately, I’d rather go blind than look at it again.
I don’t remember the last time I saw a game that looked so bad. First of all, I don’t know what resolution it is rendering at. The menus text seems to be in Retina resolution but all the in-game assets are probably rendering at iPhone 3G resolution. The textures are pretty much non-existent. The aliasing is so bad you’d cut your eyes on the edges. The lighting is worse. The mobile version completely lacks the atmosphere of the PC/console version, which considerably reduces the immersion into the game’s world. I understand some reduction in quality while going from PC/consoles to mobile, but this is simply unacceptable.
The sound is fine, thankfully. Everything, from the voice acting, to the sound effects and the eerie music, is still great and have survived the transition to the smaller screen.

Verdict

BioShock on iOS is for those who played the game back when it came out on PC and consoles, loved it, and want to play it again on mobile. If you didn’t like it back then, you aren’t going to like it now. If you haven’t played it yet, you’d rather get it on the PC or consoles, because it plays better there. Even if you have played it before, I would advise against getting it on iOS. They have really screwed the graphics on this and unless you want the memories of one of your favorite games ruined, you should stay away from it. Which is sad because otherwise it’s a good game.

Desert Stormfront Android Game Review

Desert Stormfront: Full Real-Time Strategy on your mobile phone!

Back in the nineties there was a strong period of strategy games which spawned the likes of Mega Lo Mania, The Settlers, Warcraft… the list is endless and now the developers at Noble Master Games have created a strategy game for your touchscreen phone: Desert Stormfront.  Check out the good points about this game below…

Gameplay

This is a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game which means that all the action happens live in real time as opposed to turn based games.  This means that you need to think quickly and react instantly.  Perhaps a better explanation is that Desert Stormfront is like Starcraft 2, but it’s a cut down version instead.  For you classic gamers out there, then the best description is that this is a cross of Command and Conquer with Civilization 2.

At this point you may still wondering how such a complicated game type could be put into a touch screen phone and maybe you’re thinking about what kind of game compromises have been made.  Well I can gladly say that this is very close to a full RTS. There’s resource gathering, economy management, unit production, complementing military units, the fog of war and most importantly you have to control your units to obliterate the enemy.  To satisfy proper hardcore RTS fans then there are even control groups which you can assign units to!

Relative to the vast domain of growing mobile phone gamers, these strategy games are likely to be very niche.  So to add a bit more color for those who still don’t know about RTS games, here’s a very short overview.  In Desert Stormfront you need to send jeeps into oil refineries and strongholds to take ownership of them.  Once you own the oil refineries then you will automatically generate cash which will fund the military unit production at your strongholds.  After you have your economy setup then you can start building an army.  (When in doubt the trick is to mass build the units you think will work.)  The best players will understand that the unit composition is critical to win in the fights – all units have their strengths and weaknesses.  Then the aim is to storm the enemy strongholds and wipe them out, but usually you’ll need to send multiple waves of units to whittle down the enemy forces.  There are control groups available so you can then direct sets of units at once (instead of clicking on each single unit).

Gut feel

Desert Stormfront is pretty darn amazing and the campaign missions seem to be as clever as the modern RTS missions.  The ability to play this game with one finger touch is truly amazing and the developers have definitely accounted for many factors.  Eventhough multi-touch doesn’t appear to be employed here, we suspect this won’t be far away as the phone technology gets to that fully reliable multi touch state.

First Thoughts

When our team sat down with the game we were blown away by the epic music tracks that are in the game.  They make you feel like you’re about to go to war in Gladiator and there’s beautiful depth in sound!  The next big thing anyone would notice is the old school elements…

Retro action

This game is fully stylised with nineties classic sprite graphics which are accompanied with old school midi-like sound effects.  As I write this even I am confused because there’s very high quality music which is matched up with low quality sound effects… but it works!

What’s in this Free Version?

There’s a tutorial and four missions given for you to try.  Although that may sound like very little, quite a lot is exposed: you get to see most of the Land, Sea and Air units (Jeeps, Tanks, Submarines, Hovercraft, Carriers Choppers and Fighters come to mind).  In addition to this you will see the core game mechanics.  So if you like these types of games then you’ll know if Desert Stormfront is for you.

Downers: Unfortunately not everything is explained in the game so it’s quite easy for a new player to get lost.  Even a semi experienced player may have to play the same round a few times in case they make a round losing mistake.  Although we’ve praised the developer’s single touch interface solution, it’s still tough to use.  We suspect a new player would find it sticky and a hardcore purist would feel too restricted.  Is this what it would be like playing starcraft 2 with a single button mouse on the mac?

Rating: 4/5 A truly superb Real Time Strategy game for your mobile phone.  We highly encourage all players to give the free version a try.  If you like this game then buy the full version!

Desert Stormfront Tips and Tricks:

  • The single touch interface would probably be the first big problem.  In order to get used to this, try thinking about your actions in pairs.  i.e. your first touch will select, and then your second touch will be to control whatever you’ve selected.  Otherwise you’ll end up accidentally ordering your units to walk into each other.
  • After getting accustomed to clicking, then get used to assigning and unassigning control groups.
  • Control groups are crucial for being efficient in the fights.  You may want to consider sub control groups so that you can micro manage your units to spread your attacks during fights.  This is especially important if you’ve massed up your units.
  • Keep spending your money on building military units – there’s no point in having tons of cash and not spending it.
  • Select units which will counter and defeat your opponent’s army.  In order to figure out a unit’s strengths and weaknesses then click on the unit and look at the little barcharts to determine which vehicle type it’s best against.
  • Multi tasking is the key.  Don’t just stare at what you see on the screen.  Remember that you can open the mini map and use that to help you watch everything on the map at once.

Gameplay

As Spidey in this particular game player can beside doing main missions he can do optional types to. Exploring of metropolis is more fascinating now because Spider-Man can head over to underground tunnels. Player can use spider-sense to guide him in missions. Plus for the 1st time ever, players can unleash the ability of the Black Suit as it makes Spider-Man Quicker and Stronger than ever before. How ever the longer they have it on greater evil he gets then when the sides with the screen turn black you need to turn back in the good ol reddish and blue suit or you can become a super Spider-Man Symbiote bad guy. Another thing that can be done is collect items of meteorite to boost your score and make the sport even more enjoyable.

When you total the story mode you are able to collect blue lions collect them all and you may unlock a brand-new nicer, more powerful version with the Black Suit and you simply can replay virtually any boss fight all over again The fighting periods are good as well and you may also upgrade if you complete a mission you are given points that one could spend on renovations. When you defeat a gang and help the location you are again given points. On the PS2 version we have a cheat to unlock all the upgrades but it is difficult to find and is somewhat rubbish however ladies cheat that allows you to get unlimited Dark-colored Suit power you could try. There is any cheat code about the Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 SLIM, PC you can play as Philip Parker without his or her Spider-Man costume this is how you play as him go to the Bugle talk to Robbie hell send you using a mission so go back to the Bugle and wait a couple of minutes when it claims you failed the mission chose look at something else and you will be on top with the Bugle as Philip Parker

Note: When you finally complete this glitch you should only have double dogging and running and also spider-sense.

Dracoo the Dragon Android Game Review

Dracoo the Dragon: Use your super handling powers to guide Dracoo to freedom!

Ever seen a dragon in superman colors? … no?… well now you can if you play Dracoo the Dragon!  Ok ok, its definitely not the new age Man of Steel tones, but Dracoo’s wings definitely remind me of the classic superman.  Speaking of superpowers, you’ll probably need something like that when playing this game.

Upon launching into an adventure with Dracoo you’ll instantly understand the 2D side scrolling game style.
The on screen buttons are intuitive and relatively easy to use.  Up, down, left and right are clearly indicated and the buttons are also sized to be correct for those with fat fingers.  The initial menu screen of multiple levels and the level distance guage in the top right hand corner gives you the idea that this levels are a series of fixed distances (as opposed to unlimited runner stages).

Chances are that you’ll send Dracoo to his doom very quickly in the first few tries (it’s ok, he comes back to life again ;) ).   From this suicidal practice you’ll educate yourself into understanding that you can get crushed if you don’t keep up with the screen scrolling pace.  You’ll also die if you fly into lava or critters.  Bizarrely enough eating chillis are great for Dracoo because after doing this then you can spit fireballs and you increase the number of times you can take damage… it’s a bit like collecting the power flower in Super Mario Brothers.

Killing Dracoo should become a common occurrence for many players.  Even whilst we play tested the three free levels in the two different zones we died several times.  Half the time because we were just trying to get to the end and then the other times were because we were trying to get a score high enough to be awarded with three eggs.

At some points I really wondered if I was getting rusty and if I was just some spasticated numbskull who couldn’t adapt to the game.  But then I realised that the buttons aren’t perfectly positioned and this alone is enough to cause problems if you’re manually shooting the fireballs.  (Solution here is to goto the menu and set auto-fire).  Then I read some of the reviews of the game and it became obvious that I wasn’t the only person to complain.  Other people found the game difficult, stressful and frustrating… especially with the dead end routes.

I rarely admit to defeat… its just not my style, and if you’re the same then you’ll see this game as competitive and challenging.  Admittedly the Physics are bizarrely flawed because you seem to slow down even if you fly up or down into an obstruction, but overall it is a fun game.  There is eye pleasing artwork and hopefully the third level pack will be just as cute as the others.

A slight downer is that you can easily be fooled into pressing the ads.  But the developers need to make their money somewhere right?

Rating: 3/5 Dracoo is a fun and simple little package which is perfect for those people who are out for a challenge.  Even the free levels are enough to keep players entertained.

I suggest you at least give the free game a try, and if you enjoy this type of game then consider buying the level packs.  Even if you don’t buy, the free levels provide enough of a challenge anyway!

‘Angry Birds Transformers’ for iOS and Android game review

Angry Birds Transformers is the latest and tenth installment in the Angry Bird series of games. Made in collaboration with Hasbro, Angry Birds Transformers is based on the Transformers series, the original animated one, not the terrible movies made by Michael Bay.
After a soft launch the game is now available worldwide on iOS right now and will be available on Android at the end of the month. Anyway, let’s get on with the review.

Gameplay

Angry Birds Transformers is a side-scrolling shooting game. The game is 3D but is only presented from one angle. You take control of one of the Autobirds (-_-) who is running while shooting the Deceptihogs (ಠ_ಠ). The character runs automatically and you just have to tap on the screen to point where you want to shoot.
It’s possible to shoot directly at the pigs but that takes a lot of hits before they die. The game instead encourages you to hit the structures they are placed on and then collapse the structure, which kills all the pigs on it. It’s easier to break the glass platforms than the wood, and don’t even bother shooting at the stone. There will also be TNT crates that you can shoot to instantly blow up the entire structure.
The pigs are also shooting back at you and you basically have to survive the level. The number of pigs you shoot isn’t important to finish the level but it is important to unlock future levels, so the more pigs you kill in a level, the better.
Other than surviving the attacks of the pigs, you also have tall statues falling on your. This is when you transform the characters into vehicles, which lets you escape the falling statues. The transformation can only last a few seconds and you have to let it recharge a bit before using it again. Also, you can’t shoot while you are a vehicle, and change back automatically when you shoot.
You start playing with Optimus Prime, but you unlock other Autobirds as you play. The more pigs you get, the more levels you unlock. You also get in-game currency for completing levels. This can be used to upgrade the Autobirds and make them faster and stronger. The upgrades, however, aren’t applied immediately, which is one of the annoyance of the game. You either have to wait for some time or use the limited crystals at your disposal to speed up the process.
After you finish a level, it becomes unavailable for some time. If you have to play it again to get more pigs to unlock the next level, you either have to wait for the older levels to become available again or as before, shell out the crystals.
The crystals, as you can imagine, are limited but obviously the game lets you purchase more by spending real money on it. This ‘wait or pay real money to progress’ tactic is used by countless freemium games these days and it never stops being annoying.
As for the actual game, it’s not bad. I actually had some fun plain the game, until I ran out of all the levels and had to wait for the older levels to unlock again because I didn’t collect enough pigs to unlock the next level. This is the kind of stuff that makes people never come back once they quit the game.

Graphics and Sound

Rovio deserves some praise here for first of all choosing to go with the original animated series of Transformers instead of the much more lucrative movie franchise, and secondly, making sure the look of the game is as close to the animated series as possible. Indeed, when you first launch the game, you are greeted by a slightly blurry, animated sequence that looks exactly like the old Transformer series (or old cartoons in general), complete with that analogue TV/VHS distortion at the bottom. The 3D visuals aren’t that great but acceptable for most parts.
The audio is great too. I loved the music in the games, which is again based on the Transformer series, with a bit of Angry Birds theme mixed in occasionally. It sounds good and that’s all that matters.

Verdict

I wasn’t quite sure about this collaboration before I started playing the game but Angry Birds Transformers turned out to be better than expected. The gameplay is fairly fun and I definitely appreciate the throwback to the original animated series through the visuals and sound. But this freemium model is really started to get on my nerves now and the constant waiting for things or being forced to pay to continue is deeply frustrating and makes me lose faith in the developer, gaming, and humanity, in general. I wish developers stop this horrible practice and just ask for the money upfront instead of irritating you into paying them. And just for that I wouldn’t recommend anyone to download this game, even though the game itself is decent.
